Milestone birthday’s, we have a few of them throughout our lifetime.
Of course, our 1st birthday is a huge one but not one we will actually remember ourselves. It’s more for our parents to enjoy and celebrate on your behalf. There will be presents, balloons and a cake, photos to mark the occasion and your parents may even carry on the celebrations long after you’ve fallen asleep. Party food, most of which you actually can’t enjoy yourself. But it is a birthday to be marked.
There’s a rather long gap until the next milestone birthday, 13. You are now a teenager! You actually can’t do anything new at 13 but becoming a teen is a big step in your life. The teenage years longed for over the past few years but actually, it means you are just that much closer to exams at school and more responsibilities.
16 is more of an American birthday celebration but one that has started to take over the UK in force. Sweet 16 parties are happening more frequently, and there are Proms to celebrate the end of your GCSEs. It’s an excuse for a party, really, and what a great excuse.
At 16, you can now enter into a consensual sexual relationship, get married with parental consent, drive a moped and get your National Insurance number. You can also buy lottery tickets and apply for a passport.
Adulthood is marked by your 18th birthday. You can now legally drink in the pub, go clubbing and vote. You are also now classed as an adult in the eyes of the law and treated as when should the need arise. You can get a tattoo, enter into legally binding contracts and even take out a loan. You are responsible for now making all your medical decisions for yourself. and can gain access to your savings accounts your parents may have set up for you, and you can even get married.
As 18, things suddenly become REAL, and you can’t expect your parents to bail you out anymore if times get tough, of course, they probably will but they don’t have to.
21, another big milestone to reach. You can now adopt a child if you wanted to, supervise someone learning to drive providing you’ve held your licence for that car type for 3 years.
Next up is 30. Not as widely celebrated and for many a sign you are passed childhood and well and truly an adult. You’ll be working, paying bills and have your own home (possibly, with house prices they way they currently are more and more people in their 30s still live at home).
The next milestone birthdays are celebrated in their 10’s. 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100. Many of these may be marked with a party or even a big fancy holiday.
Of course, the big 100 is also marked with a card from the Queen.
