As a busy working Mum, doing my make-up in the mornings while trying to get the kids ready for school can be a little tricky. There is no real time to spare and it really isn’t a priority of mine. That said, I do still always take 5-10 minutes to ensure I look at least half presentable – and I am certainly NOT a Mum to do the school run make-up free in my PJ’s.
Beautiful makeup does not have to take long to apply. A variety of makeup tips and tools can create a polished look in a relatively short period of time.
Moisturiser is an essential part of any skin care routine and plays a fundamental role in the application of makeup. As I am fast approaching 40, it is something I religiously do each morning and evening now, as well as removing my make-up properly (something I used to neglect in my youth).
Skin must be well hydrated in order for foundation and concealer to be applied correctly. Use a light moisturiser in the morning and apply it evenly over the skin.
Foundation is an easy way to create an even skin tone and smooth surface for all other makeup to be applied. There are numerous foundations on the market today. Stick foundation is an easy-to-use foundation that also works well as a concealer and can be applied quickly and efficiently. Apply stick foundation directly onto the skin and blend using a sponge or tips of the fingers. I prefer to use my fingers and palms to blend my foundation as I get a more even coverage and it blends better.
An eyelash curler is a quick way to create eye-popping appeal. Lash curlers make the eyes look bigger and lashes look longer. Curl the lashes and then apply two coats of lash-enhancing smudge-proof mascara. I use a water-proof one too as my eyes water all the time and I can cry at the drop of a hat these days, damn hormones!
Mascara is my must-have cosmetic of choice, and I am happy to leave the house with foundation and mascara on days I really am short of time. Not only does mascara enhance the look of the eyes but it is also visually appealing. If mascara is not applied, the face and eyes can appear tired looking.
Apply a light cream shadow over the lids of the eye up to the brow bone using the fingertips. Use a slightly darker shade and apply over the lid of the eye and the outer edge. Eye shadow should be applied to enhance the eye; a simple application in subtle shades will make the most impact.
Dab some cream blush over the apples of the cheeks and blend. Using a medium-sized brush, apply a small amount of bronzer over the cheeks and the bridge of the nose for a sun-kissed look, it helps to hide that “I’ve had no sleep” look that us Mum’s all wear from time to time (more often than not in my case).
For a finishing touch, use a large brush and apply loose powder over the entire face to set the foundation, blush and bronzer for a long-lasting makeup application.
Using a lip pencil, line the edge of the lips with colour and then fill in with a matching lipstick. Refrain from applying lip liner or lipstick outside the lines of the lips. Apply a touch of shimmering or clear lip gloss to set the lipstick. I like to use a lip stain these days as it stays on for longer and doesn’t cling to the edge of my coffee cup just as much as lipsticks do.
Professional looking makeup can be applied to the face in ten minutes and last throughout the day. Stick foundation, cream shadow and blush, a lash curler, mascara and lip gloss are key elements to a polished looking makeup application in ten minutes.
Us Mums are always lacking time to spend on ourselves, aren’t we? I bet like me you spend more time brushing, detangling and possibly plaiting the kid’s hair than you spend on yourself in the morning.
