Making moving house less stressful

**Collaborative post**

Moving house can be one of the most stressful times in our lives, the end result is certainly worth it but the months leading up to the big move are not the easiest times in our lives. The whole solicitors and legal aspect is bad enough, teamed with surveys and the possibility of things falling through at the last minute. Then you have the sorting through your life possessions to box up and take with you, put into storage or finally part with those things you’ve been hoarding over the years.

People often describe moving house as being as stressful as being made redundant or even getting divorced, and it isn’t hard to see why. That said, moving home can and should be a really exciting period. The new move could mean a new job, better living space – a nice area and so much more, and a great excuse to decorate again.

Why does moving house make us stressed?

Research has shown that over one-third of British Residents feel stressed for at least one full day weekly, with 85% of adults experiencing stress regularly. A house move can be stressful for many reasons. For instance, there are so many priorities to balance:

  • You need to tell everyone you’re moving home
  • organise the entire move,
  • pay attention to when everything needs to be done
  • Let everyone know your new address and organise redirects for mail etc.
  • Sort out the entire house
  • Pack up all your belongings
  • Oversee the moving process
  • These are just a few of the things you need to sort out and of course there can also be financial worries thrown into the mix too.

And when it comes to getting stressed-out or burnt-out it can all happen ‘at once’. The good news? With a little bit of preparation and advanced planning, you can significantly reduce the stressfulness of the experience, and enjoy the home move for what it should be – FUN!

Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone, there are companies around to help such as Big Deahl’s Movers for example.

Keep Organised

If you aren’t one to be organised and on top of things then now is the perfect time to start as there will be lots of calls, payments and other important dates to keep on top of. The key to getting ahead of your move is staying organised.

You can find loads of checklists online that you can print off to help you stay ahead and keep on top of those key dates, these range from move-in dates, to what services you’ll need to purchase and when.

If everything is written down and planned, you’re less likely to become stressed due to the work volume. Diarising everything breaks it up into ‘workable chunks’ that create more time for you to enjoy the home move.

Save Time & Money

There are lots of ways to reduce your costs and time when moving home. They’re great because the more time and money we have to spare the smoother the home move will be.

There is a rise in new technologies and services which are designed to help make things easier for you – some companies will be able to help you tell all the correct people your chance of address etc. or provide a detailed list of things you’ll need to remember to change your address on such as driving licences, health policies, insurance policies, bank accounts, doctors and loads more you probably won’t remember straight away in all the chaos.

You can also save money by negotiating more on the products and services you buy. It seems obvious, but as they say, 80% of negotiation is just asking the question

When Moving Home, Take Time for Yourself

Taking personal time during a home move is probably one of the most understated activities. And it’s surprising because it’s so important. We are so preoccupied with making sure that we get everything done that we don’t take a moment for ourselves to actually re-cooperate and take the moment in.

The issue is that there is a perennial list of activities for us to do – it’s endless. Even once we’ve moved in, there’s so much work to be done in terms of unpacking, rearranging, decorating and settling into your new home and neighbourhood.

Practically, we can improve our home moving experience by finding time every week to detach and do something else. That could be taking the Saturday evening off, or just having a great day out and forgetting about the move.

Enjoy Your Move and Ask For Help

With these tips in mind, you will have some actionable and practical steps you can implement to make your home move less stressful. Even if you take just one of these into account during your move you should see a noticeable difference in your home moving experience.

And, don’t forget to ask for and accept help, whether that is from a company who specialises in long-distance moves such as Rancho cucamonga long distance movers or friends and family helping with the packing and unpacking or an outside company who can come in and pack up your home for you. With something so stressful, you’ll not want to have to do this alone.
