We’ve all heard of a capsule wardrobe – and it’s something many of us dream of owning, but there’s more to the concept than jeans and t-shirts and a pair of shoes that can be worn for any occasion, but it doesn’t mean you have to have hundreds of items in your wardrobe – no one needs that and it can be very expensive!
If you are not ready to completely revamp your clothes rail just yet, simply add some of these staple pieces to ensure you’re covered:
A statement piece of outerwear can make all the difference to your wardrobe and we all need a go-to jacket hanging on the coat rack. You’re going to need something warm, that looks good with everything you own and also protects you from the elements. A parka coat is a popular winter staple jacket, that can be easily worn right up to summer and picked up again when autumn arrives.
A fur-lined hood is always on-trend, while khaki or black never go out of style and if you don’t fancy a longer length, bomber-style parka jackets are a lovely option and can be teamed with a long-sleeved top underneath to make them even warmer.
T-shirts are the ultimate chic wardrobe staple, perfect for mixing with jeans and those black heels. This simple item is great for casual weekends, spent exploring local coffee shops and clothing stores with friends, as well as pairing with fitted trousers for weekday workwear, and they can easily be dressed up or down with a blazer or some funky jewellery.
If you are feeling braver then why not add a few fun art-inspired t-shirts to your wardrobe or character ones instead?
Forget the baggy boyfriend jeans and the ripped knees, it’s time to add a staple pair of jeans to your wardrobe that fit well, hold you in all the right places and look good. For many, however, designer jeans just aren’t a viable option because they simply cost too much however there are plenty of high-street brands out there offering high-quality denim at reasonable prices.
Once you have found a style which fit well you could even add different colours into the mix to help brighten up your wardrobe, meaning you could keep to your dark colours for t-shirts and tops if you wanted to (these are in abundance in my wardrobe).
These are my favourite new jeans which are from Lands End – mine are a Forest Green colour but they are also available in lots of other colours. I team with a black jumper or even a patterned or sloganed t-shirt they are perfect for everyday wear, but could be worn with killer heels for a night on the town…..a girl can dream of going out again soon can’t she?
I usually opt for Blue or Black jeans but a touch of colour has been a rather nice change to an otherwise dull wardrobe and adds a different look with ease. This pair were £62.50 however they have a few colour options in this style in the sale for only £20!! I may have to invest in a few more pairs in different colours.
These go with everything, from that pencil skirt and blouse for important meetings in the office to those well-fitting jeans and a nice top at the weekend in the bar, when we are able to hit the town again. You can be creative with the style – whether you prefer an on-trend mule or a strappy heel – just be sure you opt for something that reflects your tastes and that you know you’ll wear regularly.
Whether worn for work, going out or even weddings or funerals black heels work with everything, barring Pj’s and tracksuits!
Blazers are great for work and also at the weekend for more formal occasions, and there are plenty of high street retailers providing their own take on this classic inside jacket. If you’re feeling adventurous and feel it better reflects your style, then ditch the traditional black blazer and opt for a velvet material instead, or a bold printed style that works with plain colours in your wardrobe – smart staples don’t need to be stuffy.
If, however like me and you work from home and want something less formal then a bomber jacket/baseball jacket is a great alternative – although I do recently seem to have lost mine to my daughter (first she steals my shoes and now my clothes!).
This jumper style is no longer reserved for the creepy uncle in your favourite American sitcom, now we understand why turtlenecks are such a versatile knitwear piece to have in the wardrobe. Not only do they look great with jeans and trainers for a low-key casual outfit at the weekend, but they’re also great for wearing underneath dungaree dresses or strappy camisole styles meaning we could still wear many of our summer dresses when it turns colder.
