The many colours of me | Hair dyes as a mask

hair dyes can be a mask

For almost 8 years now I have been sharing our family life over on my main blog www.emmysmummy.com, the kids feature very heavily over there. After all, it was started for them as an online diary and the plan was to print off and share once they were older.

Over that time, I have very rarely been in front of the camera, I take all of the photos in our house so getting pictures of myself either alone or with the kids proves rather difficult.

This year I am desperate to change that, no avoiding stepping into the shot and I’m trying not to worry whether my hair is done or if I’ve remembered to pop on my make-up. The kids don’t care if I’ve messy hair or a visible spot. They just want my presence and I want to be in their photos so they can look back at our family photo albums of their childhood and remember all the adventures, and misadventures we had together as a family.

Looking back on some photos with the kids this week, they’ve been giggling at the rainbow collection of colours my hair has been over the years. I think I have tried every different hair colour possible since I started dying it at the age of 16.

My natural hair colour was Strawberry Blonde, an Auburn colour that I hated at the time. I was the only one I knew to have that hair colour, and due to the Ginger tones, I was teased a lot at school for it. There are so many names I was called for my hair colour. I just hated it, and as soon as I was able, I started to dye it.

Going to school with Purple hair was a highlight of my crazier days, the teachers not too happy but thankfully I wasn’t sent home, or maybe I would have preferred to have gone home if I’m honest, school was never my favourite place to be.

I used to use hair dye as a cover, a way to hide, almost like a costume. If I was feeling down, frumpy or fed up then I would reach for a box of dye and reinvent a new version of myself. I hid behind various colours, never quite happy with being just me.  By changing the colour frequently it was like starting afresh and a new change each time.

Here are a few shades of me:

The many colours of me - hair dye colours over the years

As you can see, they were all very different, yet the same person underneath.

Recently, I took the plunge and bleached my hair at home. I had gone back to my Ginger roots for a good few months but once again I longed for a change. I am never usually brave enough to bleach it so it was a risky move but it paid off and I love it. I plan to keep this colour….well until I get bored again.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who changes their hair colour almost monthly?
